Tiancun obtained his first degree in Northwest University, Xi’an China, in 1987 and his Ph.D in heterogeneous catalysis from Lanzhou Institute of Chemical Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1993. He then moved to work in Shandong University as an Associate Professor in Environmental Chemistry, during which he collaborated with Sinopec, and Shandong Provincial Government.

He came to Oxford University in 1999 as a Royal Society-BP Amoco Research Fellow. Since then he has been continuously working in Inorganic Chemistry Laboratory, Oxford University. Dr. Xiao has published more than 100 papers in catalysis and filed 12 patents. He co-founded Oxford Catalysts, a Spin Out company from Oxford University, and floated in London Stock Market in 2006.

Together with professor Peter P Edwards and Dr. Hamid AlMegeren, Dr. Xiao established the KACST-Oxford Petrochemical Research Centre in 2010, a centre of excellence specializing in petrochemical technology research and development, where he is the technical director of the Centre.
